Minstrel in the Corner drums

Minstrel in the Corner drums

The band spent most of its rehearsal time this week finalizing the drum parts for Minstrel in the Corner, and Kevin now has all the drum parts the way he wants them. With that out of the way, he began work on recording this week as well. Although no actual tracks have been laid down yet, the drums are now more or less all mic’d up and ready to go, with only a little more tweaking of placement and tuning needing to be done. If it hasn’t been mentioned in earlier posts, mic’ing and recording drums is a pretty huge undertaking, and it takes quite a while to get everything sounding right, and even longer to get everything sounding great. In the end, though, the time spent on getting everything just right is well worth it. The plan now is to have the drums all recorded by early next week at the latest, after which Matt will lay down his bass tracks.

We also spent some time working on Dark Matter at rehearsal, which was a first for Steve (his recovery from surgery has prevented him from being at earlier rehearsals where the rest of the band worked on it). It’s still pretty early in the game for this one, but initial attempts at keyboard arrangements are already sounding pretty good. As always, we’ll take our time and try out as many different arrangements as possible before settling on the best one. We’ll keep you posted on that, as well as recording developments.
