Bass and pre-production work done

Bass and pre-production work done

Once again sorry for the long gap between updates. A number of issues have come up in the past several weeks that caused our progress to grind to a halt. Last week, however, was a productive one, and Rob and I got together to discuss drum parts for Moments of Truth, which will be the last song on the upcoming album release. A couple days later, I began recording the bass parts for What Will You Do When You Find Me? and Experience Innocence, completing them on Saturday. Rob is going to take some time working out his drum parts, after which recording for that last song will begin.

Almost there….

Getting closer…

Getting closer…

We’re one step closer to completing album #3 as Rob recorded drum and percussion parts for Experience/Innocence, the largely acoustic song on the upcoming album. Recording went relatively smoothly with virtually no technical mishaps to contend with. I’ve decided to wait until the last song is recorded to lay down the bass, guitar and vocal tracks on these last 2 songs (I will likely record keyboard parts sooner, however). This leaves only only one more song before the recording phase of the album will be complete.

For the gear heads out there, I’ve been experimenting with playing in-the-box (i.e.,  through a computer with effects and amplifier and speaker simulations rather than an amp) as a live setup. This technology has already made its way into my recording process, as I used a similar technique to record the 2nd guitar part in What Will You Do When You Find Me?. This technology has gotten to the point where it sounds at least as good as its analog equivalents, and offers much more flexible routing possibilities, and, once all the tones are programmed in, is far easier to get a consistently great sound with in a live setting. Implementing this technology into my live setup will involve a few hurdles (not the least of which is designing and building a new custom pedalboard), but I hope to begin using in the next couple of months.

More recording done

More recording done

Just a quick update – I got nearly all the keyboard parts for What Will You Do When You Find Me recorded last week (I plan to finish these off in the next day or 2), all the guitar parts recorded on the weekend, and I just finished the recording the vocal parts a few minutes ago. Rob is currently working on drums for the next (and 2nd last to be recorded) song on the album; this one is entirely acoustic and should be a comparatively easy one to record. Hopefully we’ll be laying drum tracks down in the next few weeks.

Final acoustic guitar parts for Gone and drums for next song recorded

Final acoustic guitar parts for Gone and drums for next song recorded

It was a busy day yesterday, as I spent most of the afternoon recording the final acoustic guitar parts to Gone, and Rob spent the evening recording drums for What Will You Do When You Find Me?, which is the next song we’ve chosen to record. We both got some great tones and recordings, and are looking forward to laying down the remaining tracks on the new song. We’ll be taking a short break to celebrate Christmas, but should be back to recording early in the new year.

We wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

See you in 2018.
