The band began working on a new song this week, entitled Minstrel in the Corner. This is another fairly long one, but everyone was happy that we actually got through the first 5 minutes or so and are fairly firm on the actual arrangement. This is in stark contrast to I, Awake, where (as those who have been following our progress may remember) it took several weeks just to nail down the 1st couple of minutes. The fact that we got through the first part of this song much quicker is a pretty good indication that everyone is getting more comfortable with each other and that Steve is settling in nicely with the band. Or maybe this one's just easier...

Anyway, we also continued working on polishing our existing songs, and plan on forging ahead with the next few minutes of Minstrel in the Corner at the next rehearsal.

Very productive rehearsal on Tuesday this week, as the band finally made it through all 5 of the songs from the upcoming CD release. Previous rehearsals found us spending a lot of time ironing out details and timing issues, but these things seem to have all come together, and we actually got through everything with relative ease and time to spare. Future rehearsals will be spent tightening up the already pretty solid performances, and everyone agreed that it's probably time to start working on some other new material.

With that in mind, band members will be spending some time before our next rehearsal going over and working out parts for a new song entitled Minstrel in the Corner.

This was especially impressive since Jim cut his left hand pinky finger last week and needed a few stitches (he took the bandage off and it looks really nasty). Everyone's hoping it'll heal up soon.

We started out with Next Time Around, which we haven't really played that much since we recorded it. After going through it a couple of times, it was as if we never left it, and it sounds pretty good on the recording we made.

We also took a shot at Not That Far Away, which we've never played with Steve on keyboards. After a couple of runthroughs, this one sounded pretty solid too, although Steve would like a little more time to work on the solo section which contains multiple key changes.

Social Engineering and I, Awake also sounded really solid and some extra time was spent tightening up some tricky timing parts in the former. By the time we got around to Crippled by Fear it had gotten pretty late, so we decided to save that one till next time.

We sailed through Social Engineering, Crippled by Fear, and I, Awake at rehearsal on Monday with relative ease. Since these are the longest and most complicated of our songs, the band was relieved at finally being on top of them and discussions turned to potential gig opportunities now that we can actually perform these things with a real keyboard player! The plan is to continue to fine tune these songs and begin adding the remaining 2 (Next Time Around and Not that far away) in the coming weeks so that by summer we'll be more than gig ready.

On the recording front, we are hoping to begin recording drums in the next few weeks. We realize that hope has been posted before, but this time it looks like it might actually happen! Seriously though, there's not a lot of point in hitting that record button unless things are absolutely bang on, and with a song as complex as I, Awake that`s no small feat. Kevin is happy with his performances at rehearsal, but has chosen to fine tune his parts a bit more before recording.

Plans for visual effects and possible upcoming live venues were also discussed last week. We'll post more on that as we get more details.

This week's rehearsal went very well as we got through all of I, Awake, Social Engineering, and Crippled by Fear. This is a first for the band, as we've always had something to work on in depth on any one of those three songs (bear in mind that they range from 13 - 17 minutes in length). We spent a bit of extra time on timing in sections of Social Engineering, reviewing some bass parts here as well, and also fine tuning the vocal harmonies in Crippled by Fear. Overall it was a very productive jam for us, and with Steve now pretty much completely up to speed on these songs, they'll be performance ready in no time.

On the recording front, Kevin has been delayed in firming up his drum parts for I, Awake, and has wisely chosen to spend a bit more time getting things perfect before we begin recording, which will hopefully begin in the next couple of weeks.

The last 2 are really coming along nicely, with the timing issues now becoming a lot less prevalent in Social Engineering. Good progress is being made in Crippled by Fear as well, as Steve becomes more and more familiar with the changes in that song.

We are now planning to record drum tracks for I, Awake in the next couple of weeks. Although we were pretty much ready to go before Christmas, Kevin came up with some new parts over the holidays, and wants to make sure everything is rock solid before the tape starts rolling .

The band had a very productive jam last night, working on I, Awake, Social Engineering and Crippled by Fear. Since I, Awake is basically ready to record (in fact the recording on it has already started as noted in previous posts), it just got a cursory once-over, with a little discussion on some of the finer points of the song. Social Engineering is really starting to come together now, with only a couple of small timing issues to work out.

The big surprise of the night was Crippled by Fear. Although we'd previously only looked at small sections of this one, we got through the entire song last night with only minor glitches along the way. Steve now has a pretty solid handle on the keyboard parts of this song, and it won't be long before we have it totally under control.

With Christmas fast approaching, we decided to put off any more recording (particularly the drums) until the new year.

Since some parts of I, Awake have a loose timing to them, we decided it would be better to lay down these before doing drum tracks, so Kevin didn't have to try to guess at what the rest of the band might be playing. The recording went well, and a fair amount of time was spent picking and tweaking keyboard sounds to get the best possible sound for the part.

We hope to get the last of these keyboard parts recorded by this time next week, but we may have to wait until after Christmas to begin recording drums.
