More work on Minstrel this week

More work on Minstrel this week

The band spent more rehearsal time this week practicing and arranging Minstrel in the Corner, with Jim adding some bass parts to the section we worked on at our last jam. This section is really coming together now, but we’ve definitely been spoiled by the beginning section of this song. We’ve gone through that a number of times, adding and trying out different bits here and there, but that part is pretty much arranged. As with any of our songs, it will evolve over the months as we work on it too. This next section, though, is kind of a double edged sword (much like our other songs, but most recently I, Awake); while it’s really fun and interesting trying out different things and there’s a certain excitement in watching it develop, not knowing really how it’ll sound in the end, this whole process is work intensive and time consuming. In the end, we’d rather take the time and get the song as good as it can possibly be, despite the fact that progress may be slow.

On the recording front, Jim will be sidetracked by some personal business for the next week or so, but he’s hoping to get those I, Awake bass parts recorded sometime the following week.

Minstrel in the Corner

The band ventured a little farther into Minstrel in the Corner this week, working on establishing keyboard and drum parts for the next section of the song. We made a lot of headway, and even got into a little bit of the next section as a bonus. If early successes are any indication, we should be through this one much quicker than I, Awake.

Speaking of I, Awake,  Steve recorded a few more bits of the keyboard parts earlier in the week. Jim’s up next, and is hoping to get started (and finished) on the 17th and 18th of September.

More Minstrel

With the drums for I, Awake now done, the band shifted its focus to a new tune at rehearsal this week entitled Minstrel in the Corner. We started working on this one a bit before the Canada Day show, but once we started rehearsals for that, it kind of got neglected so we were glad to be able to get back into it (even if we didn’t remember some of the parts we’d written…).

Once we got into it again, the ideas started coming back and we made good progress, getting to about the 4 minute mark or so and sharing a lot of ideas on what to do with the next section. We also spent some time working on I, Awake so Jim and Steve could brush up any of their parts before recording starts again.

On that note, Steve will be laying down another bit of keyboards this week before Jim goes in to do some  bass tracks. Once Jim’s parts are recorded, Steve will finish off his keyboard parts (you may remember that he already recorded some a while back), leaving only guitar and vocals. Sounds like a lot, but it shouldn’t take too long to finish up now.
