Minstrel in the Corner drums

Minstrel in the Corner drums

The band spent most of its rehearsal time this week finalizing the drum parts for Minstrel in the Corner, and Kevin now has all the drum parts the way he wants them. With that out of the way, he began work on recording this week as well. Although no actual tracks have been laid down yet, the drums are now more or less all mic’d up and ready to go, with only a little more tweaking of placement and tuning needing to be done. If it hasn’t been mentioned in earlier posts, mic’ing and recording drums is a pretty huge undertaking, and it takes quite a while to get everything sounding right, and even longer to get everything sounding great. In the end, though, the time spent on getting everything just right is well worth it. The plan now is to have the drums all recorded by early next week at the latest, after which Matt will lay down his bass tracks.

We also spent some time working on Dark Matter at rehearsal, which was a first for Steve (his recovery from surgery has prevented him from being at earlier rehearsals where the rest of the band worked on it). It’s still pretty early in the game for this one, but initial attempts at keyboard arrangements are already sounding pretty good. As always, we’ll take our time and try out as many different arrangements as possible before settling on the best one. We’ll keep you posted on that, as well as recording developments.

Falling Edge

Welcome back Steve

Welcome back Steve

It was business as usual this week at rehearsal, as Steve rejoined the remaining members of Falling Edge for the first time since his leg operation in June. A good deal of time was spent refreshing everyone’s memory in Sex for Sale, as well as fine tuning some of the more tricky rhythmic parts in the song. Although a little rusty, most of the bugs were worked out after a few run throughs.

From there we moved on to Minstrel in the Corner, which we got through as if Steve had never been gone. As promised in earlier posts, Kevin is more or less ready to record his drum parts for this epic, and there are tentative plans to start that next week. The Lost Journal was next on the list, and after a couple of false starts, we played through it with relative ease as well. There are essentially 3 songs ready to record, so things are in very good shape for the next album. Providing there are no further interruptions, this 2nd album should be out in a much shorter time than the first.

Keep your fingers crossed….

Falling Edge in The Chatham Voice

Steve’s been laid up since his leg surgery, but the band has been plugging away at the new material, notably Dark Matter, so there hasn’t been too much to report lately. However, The Chatham Voice printed an interview with Chris Rupert today, so click the link if you’re interested in reading it.

We’ll keep you posted on our progress, but we’re hoping to have Steve out at rehearsal next week, and are planning on laying down some drum tracks for Minstrel in the Corner either next week or the week after.
